Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis

Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis

Parent-Child Book Discussion
Grades 4-5
May 2008

Snacks: apples and teddy grahams

1. Share general thoughts about the book

2. Show of hands-- how many had read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or saw the movie? How important was it to know about the first story? Did the sequel make sense? (sidenote-- in the book Caspian is 13 yrs old, in the movie he is a man...)

3. When did the Pevensies realize where they were? What had changed since they were last in Narnia?

4. How did the Telmarines arrive in Narnia?

5. How can you tell Narnian animals apart from the non-talking ones? Name some of the Narnians in the book.
--Aslan is a Turkish word for lion
--"Caspian" means "of or pertaining to the Caspian Sea."
-- Mirza, not Miraz, is a title of honor and also means prince.
--Telemarine, tele=travel or transport long distances; marine=sea or branch of military
--Trufflehunter= truffles are an expensive, delicious fungus that grows underground
--Pattertwig= perhaps the noise a squirrel makes jumping through trees?
--Reepicheep= carries a rapier, cheep=sound of a small chick
--Trumpkin=trump, to surpass/excel; kin=relation or family
--Nikabrik= nic is to steal; a brick is hard
--Prunaprismia= prune/prissy?
--Cornelius= Latin for "horn"
Cair Paravel= sound almost like prevail?; paravail means inferior/or equal landholders

6. How do the children prove to Trumpkin who they really are? How would you prove to someone that you are really you? Write down 3 things about yourself, 2 true and 1 false. Read them to the group. We have to guess what is false.

7. What is a DLF? Do you have any silly nicknames? People use a lot of abbreviations when they type to people. What do the following mean (feel free to ask for other ones):

LOL= laugh out loud
ASAP=as soon as possible
BRB= Be right back
BFF= Best Friends Forever
TTYL= Talk to you later
BTW=By the way
YNK= You Never Know
VIP=Very Important Person

8. Who has trouble seeing Aslan? Why do you think that is?

9. Why did Miraz decide to fight the Narnians?

10. Aslan tells two of the children that they will never return to Narnia. How do you think they feel about this?

the makers of Prince Caspian kept to the original story surprisingly well... i heard they were going to make it into a silly pure-action flick, but thankfully this was not the case
